#15 Madroots: Memoir

Part 2 POEMS: High School Strength Building Exercises & The Living Dead
2

High School wasn’t great for me. I mean, it wasn’t for a lot of people! I even smoked for a week at one point until my boyfriend told me I had to choose between cigarettes and him. I chose him. I’m so grateful to him for that ultimatum! I do remember having some other good friends too. I ended up at one dear friend’s house the evening my parents decided to split up for good. I’m also grateful for him! And my, now late, friend Jean was always there for me even if she encouraged me to smoke like she did. Ha! I’m still friends, 45ish years later, with all of those people—including Jean, even though she is across the veil, I still feel connected.

Also, some of my ‘friends’ weren’t so friendly after they started to catch wind of what was going on in my family. That bit was painful and is what this first poem is about.
