If there was ever a moment in my life that I regret, this is it. When madness is the driving force in a family, rationality goes out the window. Capacity for compassion and clear headedness can get sidelined, at least for a time. This poem is hands-down the hardest piece, emotionally, that I’ve ever written. (And I’ve written a lot of tough stuff.) It’s slowly getting easier as I read this aloud over and over in order to rewrite, retitle and re-craft it. But it still breaks my heart that an innocent animal paid the price for our insanity.
