Living with someone who is unable to engage with the world in a way that makes sense to most of us, someone who is losing their grip on, well, everything, is sliding into madness, makes for surreal situations that are very much real. When that person is a parent, it gets all the more surreal and frightening for a child. That’s what the first poem is about, one of those surreal situations that happened repeatedly when I was a young teen.
